New Video: Interactions between sustainability and welfare in Vietnamese shrimp farms

RMIT University Vietnam have shared the following video about their research on interactions between sustainability and welfare in Vietnamese shrimp farms. It summarises the research activites and preliminary findings. The final results will be shared in due course.

Their analysis revealed several key preliminary findings. First, there are notable trade-offs in intensive farming systems, where higher economic gains often come at the expense of shrimp welfare and environmental sustainability. In contrast, extensive farming systems tend to show greater synergy between environmental sustainability and animal welfare, although this is not universally observed across all metrics. Additionally, the shrimp farming sector faces demographic challenges, with the average farmer being 52 years old and having 19 years of experience, underscoring the need for long-term workforce planning and strategies to attract younger generations into the industry.
