Can raising fish within a broader food system reduce overall environmental impacts?

A poultry-fish integrated pond in Noahkhali… can raising fish within a broader food system reduce overall environmental impacts?

Stephanie Horn is working with Dr Abdullah Al Mamun’s team from the Noahkhali Science and Technology University in Bangladesh. Supported by Worldfish and University of Stirling stipend she is assessing the environmental and nutritional impact of GIFT tilapias in several locations around the country. They are currently assessing poultry fish farms  to establish if the practice of integration reduces overall environmental impacts-because the poultry waste fertilises the pond and produces natural feed for the plankton grazing tilapias, they require much less or no additional feed. In fed aquaculture impacts associated with production of feed (mainly growing and processing of feed grains) often dominate environmental impacts based on Life Cycle Analysis.
