Simão Zacarias meets research project leaders from Can Tho and Tra Vinh Universities

Simão with Tran Minh Phu at Can Tho University.

Simão Zacarias has continued visits to our research project partners with travel in the Southern part of Vietnam. He went first to the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries at Can Tho University, where he met Tran Minh Phu who is leading two of the funded research projects. His projects are titled “Perceptions of farmed fish welfare by different stakeholders: a focus on small-scale fish farms in Mekong Delta” and “Evaluating the benefits and practicality of in-water electric stunning for Pangasius in a commercial harvest setting”. Simão also met some of Tran Minh Phu’s colleagues and students, and was shown some of the wet labs.

Students and lecturers were involved in artificial insemination of Botia modesta Bleeker fish when Simão was visiting one of the wet labs. It is a local species for which Can Tho University has been developing breeding and farming technology

After visiting Can Tho, he met Pham Long from Tran Vinh University in Ho Chi Minh City, who is the research leader of another funded project which focus on “Addressing the aquatic animal welfare gaps in the Vietnamese education system”. Simão was pleased to learn that Pham is an alumni of the Institute of Aquaculture, completing his PhD there almost 10 years ago.

Simão and Pham Long from Tra Vinh University met in Ho Chi Minh city to discuss our projects.
