PhD Success for Wes and Olek

Congratulations to Wesley Malcorps and Alexander Kaminski for successfully completing their PhD studies.

Wesley Malcorps undertook his PhD studies “Stakeholder perceptions and sustainable intensification strategies for European aquaculture” as a researcher with the EU Green Aquaculture Intensification in Europe (GAIN) project. He has now been appointed as a researcher on the Horizon Europe SmartAqua4FuturE (SAFE) project and is also active as the Sustainable Supply Chain Lead at ThinkAqua.

The External Examiner was Prof. Simon Bush, chair of the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University. He also serves on the Academic Board of Wageningen University and is a member of the Board of the WIMEK Graduate School, as well as the multi-stakeholder group of Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch programmes and the Standards Oversight Committee of the Global Seafood Alliance.

Alexander “Olek” Kaminski, a Commonwealth Scholar, completed his thesis titled “Nutrition-sensitive solutions for aquaculture development in Africa” in partnership with WorldFish in Zambia and latterly with Victory Farms and Nutreco in Kenya. He has now started work with FUTUREFISH as Project Lead on their Blue Food Partnership Ghana initiative.

Olek’s External Examiner was Dr Ben Belton, a PhD graduate from the Institute of Aquaculture in 2010 who is now a Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), working in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit based in Dhaka. He also holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of International Development at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics, Michigan State University.
